The best trench coat is literally a lifelong companion. It’s a core wardrobe item that’s always ready when you need it but quite accepting in being packed away for a few months until the weather changes. It took me a long time many years ago to find what I thought was my perfect trench. Luckily the strongest trend in 2024 is the over-sized look so we can all now look contemporary and create a waist-line at the same time. Storm Flap:

An extra piece of fabric on the back or front designed to prevent rain from seeping through. Again, this feature adds quite a bit of weight and as a traditional design feature which was compensating for fabrics which weren’t waterproof, this is a feature that’s no longer really essential

Water-Resistant versus Waterproof Fabric:

Traditionally made from gabardine, most Trench coats on the market are water resistant at best. This is no problem if you are looking for a fashion piece over a weather protective functional item and it means you have a wide choice of fabrics from leather to Cottons to choose from. Straps or buckles at the wrists to tighten the cuffs and prevent water from entering are a good idea and they can also lend themselves to shortening the sleeve whenever needed.
