This is my go to coat – it’s uber stylish, beautiful colour (olive), hangs beautifully – quite frankly it makes me feel amazing when I wear it. Like the other reviewers I get a lot of compliments and am always delighted to let people in on our little secret ? Oh and it’s waterproof as well with roomy pockets – what’s not to love! You won’t regret buying this piece…

Love my black commuter. Great coat, no idea how I managed without it. I got it last year and have worn it almost daily right through the mild winter we just had. Have been in complete downpours and stayed dry. It’s coming in handy this summer too! Only now am seeing the waterproofing start to fail a bit. Am looking at whether I need to re-proof. Customer service was brilliant. Size wise though it’s been a challenge. I am 5’4” with boobs so am usually a 14. Ordered the 12-14 and no joy so had to go for 16-18 which is too big nearly everywhere especially the length of the arms. Commuter is quite straight cut and those super stylish narrow sleeves have to be rolled up on me. However the joy of having a really properly waterproof jacket outweighs the niggles every time. Going to try the Mac next…in the meantime make a commuter for men. My other half would love that.

I’ve never spent so much on a coat in my life but I’m so glad I did! The “Commuter” is fantastic – it’s truly waterproof and wind proof, cosy and warmer than I expected. You can just shove it in a bag and it doesn’t crease. It’s very stylish and looks good with everything. The fabric feels lovely, and amazingly, dog hairs just seem to fall off (Very important when you’re wearing black!) I love the slim sleeves and the ability to adjust the fit at the wrist. I’m a size 10 at the top and 12/14 at the bottom and the size 2 fits fine. I would definitely buy another in a different colour, just not sure which. Customer service is excellent! Thank you

I was looking for a lighter weight jacket, I bought the commuter in burnt orange. This is a quality jacket the perfect fit performs really well, I like the pocket venting and the hidden hood arrangement as well as the beautiful colour it’s perfect! Worn on a number of occasions and I continue to be impressed with it.

Just taken delivery of this coat so can’t wait for it to rain ! Its everything the company says it is. Great design , great fabric and great fit. Service thoughout has been excellent from sending swatches to answering all my queries. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for “the waterproof coat “

I too have have purchased the Commuter after owning the trench for some time – in my case, the black. For me, the relaxed feel of the style of the commuter in the body was ideal as I ride my bike to work and whilst the trench kept me totally dry and looked smart, even on an upright Brompton I felt slightly constrained by the belt. The Commuter, however, is absolutely perfect with the room in the body area, fitting nice and neat on the shoulder and still looking sleek and smart elsewhere. The zipped pockets are ideal for my Oyster card as I do a mixed mode commute. The high neck was lovely and cosy and the fabric is some sort of magic in blocking wind along by the Thames. This coat should see me into all but the deepest winter with another layer on – today at 8 degrees I had only a short sleeve merino top and jeans, and was plenty snug. I am a 12-14 short and did have to size down from the size that my trench is due to the roomier style of the Commuter. Return and exchange for the Small was quick and easy.

I love it. It’s just arrived this morning so I haven’t had a chance to try it out, but frankly I don’t care. I’ve tried it on and it looks amazing. Plus I know that when I take it to wet blustery Cape Town next week, it’s going to be the perfect top layer, stylish but practical. And the team were amazing. I initially ordered the wrong size, realised in a panic when it arrived and hastily asked them to send me a replacement in time for my trip. Incredible service. Thank you!

  9. Patricia

This is my second purchase as I bought the City Walker first which I love. The Commuter is the longer version and Iove the simplicity: the collar is stylish and the zip hidden. When zipped it is sleek and when left open the collar hangs nicely. The material shouts quality. I was asked by a colleague how I always look so ‘put together’.

Originally sent for the mac in dark storm grey which looked very stylish, except for the colour which made me look ‘washed out’. Sent that back and reordered a commuter in olive green which I’m really delighted with. There’s a bit more room in the commuter so I’ll easily get a thick sweater/fleece under it. When it arrived, and I first tried it on, I was wearing a long sleeved T and thick cotton cardigan. It went over those no problem and still looked smart and non bulky. The forecast is for snow over the next few days so I’ll be wearing it on my next outing. Haven’t given up on buying a mac in a month or so. Just have to think which colour would be best for me.

I have just received my “Commuter” absolutely delighted! Looking forward to the weather forecast at the weekend to try it out. Sizing is spot on. I am a size 14 and took the size 3. Fits really well. There is room for an extra layer in winter weather without taking anything away from its stylish looks. Material is so tactile! This is my second “Protected Species” buy. Eldest daughter has all 4 designs, younger daughter has just purchased her second. They design practical jackets with a modern twist that are suitable for all age groups. Customer service is excellent.

  12. Margaret Baker

I LOVE the commuter – it arrived today. I ordered the parka first and I really liked the fabric but the style did not suit me – the collar was too big. The free return process and money refund was excellent. The only reason I did not buy the commuter to start with was the colour. I really did not want black and the red and olive were the ‘wrong’ shades for me. However I will just have to wear a scarf to lighten it up. The coat has a lovely feel and the shape is perfect – obviously I have not tested out its weather capabilities yet but judging from the references I am sure it will be perfect. Please could we have some ‘spring’ colours in the range – you do Winter, Autumn and Summer colours – but no spring – what about a clear navy or a stone? I think this will turn out to be my go to coat

  13. Julie Edwardson

Just bought the commuter in black and absolutely love it. Can’t wait to wear it and will be buying the Mac very soon.

  14. Joy P

Beautiful quality fabric, very stylish, light to wear and very easy to pack… totally waterproof even after a day in heavy rain. Droplets just shake off … without doubt the best rain coat I’ve ever owned ..couldn’t recommend more highly.

  15. Jen

In the few weeks since I’ve bought this (in black) it’s accompanied me to important meetings, up a hill in Scotland in the pouring rain, cycling to work, and out for cocktails. It’s worked perfectly in all these situations and kept me warm and dry – notably when others’ “proper waterproofs” have failed. It also feels beautiful and goes with everything and has zipped pockets. And folds up in a bag and comes out looking perfect. Overall, the best thing I’ve bought in ages.

  16. Jean

Purchased the commuter in Black and love it! Owned it for a week now and it’s rained every day so it’s been a blessing! Love the feel of the jacket and it hangs perfectly on so will not be the last protected species jacket I buy, city walker next on my list! Asked for some size advice and had a reply within half an hour so first class service also. Might be a small company but it’s a fantastic product and although not cheap, I do think it’s value for money.

  17. Indie

The search is over… This is the coat I have been looking for! It is comfortable, chic and 100% waterproof. The fabric is soft and doesn’t feel like usual waterproof fabric. A flattering, draped cut means it is elegant and the zipped pockets and a large, foldaway hood make it entirely practical. I couldn’t choose between the Dark Olive and the Deep Burgundy. The Olive is a beautiful colour but it has a cream lining which I worried might get dirty quickly. The Burgundy is equally gorgeous and has a matching burgundy lining. I love them both. Customer Service was flawless when I went back to them with questions about the lining. Now my only problem is how to decide which to choose… or should I keep both?!

  18. Helen

Fabulous coat – stylish, practical and comfortable – I love it! I admit I was worried about spending so much on a coat but having had it for about 6 weeks I now consider it to be a good investment and the “cost per wear” will be very reasonable! I’ve worn it most days to work and at the weekend, and was even glad to wear it on a blustery city break in Berlin in June! I thought I might not need the hood, but given all the rain recently it has come in very handy! It also washed well and dried quickly after I spilled a takeaway coffee over myself in the car. My only constructive feedback is the cream/beige patterned lining looks grubby and you do see it when the hood is down but not zipped away in between showers (the lining colour was also not shown very obviously on the product images online). The coat is pretty roomy so I went for the small size and normally wear a 10-12.

  19. Hannah

Bought the commuter in black earlier on in the year…but with the amazing summer we’ve had, I haven’t had chance to really wear it or test it out till now! Firstly, this is such a stylish coat, I have several waterproof jackets but they’re all a bit too “dog walky” and I wanted something smart. The commuter is perfect – great over jeans and equally perfect over smart work wear. All women know that sizing is ridiculous – I range from and 8 to a 14 depending on where I shop! I’m slim but have boobs so sometimes have trouble with too tight on top, too baggy on the bottom issues! I went for the 10-12, it’s quite roomy – over a thin jumper it feels loose although still looks very smart, I’ve worn it over a thick polo neck jumper and also over my winter coat so its very versatile. I did order the 8-10 originally, which still fitted nicely on the body, but the arms were a little too short for me and it wouldn’t have layered as well as the larger size. Having now worn the coat on two recent very rainy trips to London and Manchester…I can confirm that the waterproof properties of this coat are an absolute revelation!!! Amazing, I was bone dry underneath. It also dries very quickly as the water literally falls off it. Great hood which doesn’t fall off and covers your head whether it’s a hair up or down day. So all in all, I love this coat and it’s well worth the price tag. Does everything it says on the tin whilst remaining classy and beautiful. Just buy one! ?

Bought the commuter in black, it arrived yesterday, love it so much I’ve just bought the city walker in white.

  21. Ellen Taylor

Just received my commuter jacket today. Beautiful stylish jacket, fits true to size, 100% happy with it. Service was fantastic, very quick delivery.

  22. Elizabeth

Love, love, love this coat. I am rather annoyed it’s warm weather at the moment because I want to wear it all the time. I have never had such a beautiful coat, and the fact that it’s waterproof too is fabulous. The team is delightful to deal with, speedy responses and great advice. I have also bought another style (City Walker) for my daughter, and might have to get another for myself.

  23. Chris

Just purchased ‘The Commuter’ in burnt horizon after owning a blue trench for some time I loved the original but for me this is even better. It’s really gorgeous. It’s versatile and will be suitable for both visits to London and walking the tors in Devon I am anywhere between a 10 and 14 with a small frame and the size 2 fitted me perfectly. Thanks for the coat and your excellent service Chris.

  24. Bella

You could say I am a fan of the Protected Species brand- this is my fourth purchase. I love the way this jacket ‘flows’ and the fabric is so soft. I get so many compliments when I wear any of the jackets and (begrudgingly) pass on details of the website.

  25. Caterina Coates

I ordered the Commuter in Burnt Horizon after seeing it on a fashion website, it might have been Stylist or Emerald Street; I fell in love at first sight. When it arrived I was so excited and as I opened the packet I knew that this was going to be The One, a lifelong love. It’s just so beautiful, all clean lines and perfect draping, it feels so comfortable and light, yet it protected me well from the cold wind of this unseasonally miserable spring. Wearing it makes me feel better looking , stylish and elegant. I have received innumerable compliments about it and I have recommended it – and Protected Species – to more people than I can count. Not only this is the most stylish outdoor garment I will ever possess, it is just so well made and carefully finished. A very important bonus on top of all this joy is the fact that all your manufacturing is ethical, which is a major issue for me when deciding what to buy. Thank you, Protected Species, in me you now have a customer for life!

  26. Polly

I have the commuter in “Burnt Horizon” – it’s a fantastic coat, light, waterproof, comfortable and a beautiful colour. It’s amazing how it can be worn in different temperatures and adapt to suit. I also love how stylish it is and have had many comments on it.

  27. Claire Close

I had been looking at this website for a few months, had emailed Abigail for advice ( her reply was informative and spot on), but was still unsure as to spending so much on a coat online. After much deliberation I took the plunge and OMG!!! It was so worth it. It feels luxurious, is practical yet looks fabulous on and makes me feel smarter than just an everyday coat. Wore it today for the first time in the rain and, wow, when they say waterproof, they mean waterproof. It is amazing. I went for the Commuter in dark olive green. Commuter recommended by Abigail from PS, and definitely a fab choice. Sizing 16-18, I am a good 16/18 and was worried about it being ‘snug’, but it is a perfect fit and I can do the zip up without looking ridiculous. The colour is great, I did consider the orange but as I am fair in colouring, and silvery hair thought that it might wash me out. But the olive is fab. The hood is great, nice and big but didn’t fall off and hid my lockdown hair well! It is definitely worth investing in one one of these coats, and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one now. Absolutely love it.

  28. Siobhan ONeill

I ordered this in the olive and the burnt horizon. Although I loved the olive and would have kept both, I’m not greedy, the burnt horizon is the keeper. Such a beautiful colour. Amazing fit. So stylish. Hangs beautifully and looks great worn open or buttoned upI feel so glamorous in it. I love it. Great investment.

  29. Bessie

Probably my most stylish PS jacket (I have them all and love each one). This one just hangs so nicely and is extremely versatile. I tend to wear the commuter at any time of the year because of how lightweight it is and you just never know when it’s going to rain in the UK. Such an incredible jacket. I can’t wait to get it in other colours!

  30. Cici

Bought this about 8 months ago and yes, it’s a lovely jacket but here are a few things people should know: – the cocoon shape is lovely but on larger sizes it’s not exactly very giving around the bottom area. I’m a safe size 16 and the bottom area is very close fitting, fine when I’m standing but when sitting it’s a bit too tight for comfort. – there is only a zip to hold it closed along the length of the body., so it’s either zipper up and closed or not at all (given the size/bottom issue above makes it less flexible to wear) I understand this lack of other fastening makes for a cleaner draped look but good for people to know – it is quite thin, it’s not a winter-thickness coat so you will need to layer up on colder days

  31. Jennifer McClelland

My commuter in olive has just arrived today. I was so excited to see it, I tore the package open. Straight on it went, Perfect, I love love love it. It is a beautiful fit. Can’t wait for tomorrow to go out in it. Thank you so much for the very prompt delivery. I will be back for the Mac next.

  32. Jenny Wales

Hello I have bought a commuter and love it! My one wish is that you would design something for shorter people (5’1”) like me. The Commuter in your pictures is mid thigh or even shorter. I would love a parka that didn’t come down to my knees!
